Exciting
News here in Philly!!
Are you aware the Inquirer
& Daily News may go on strike Tuesday at midnight leaving
the Philadelphia Metro as the ONLY daily newspaper here in Philly?
The Newspaper Guild of Greater Philadelphia has overwhelmingly
voted to strike. They represent a wide variety of newspaper employees
- reporters, photographers, artists, editors, accountants, internal
auditors, administrators, support staff and advertising sales
and circulation customer service representatives at The Inquirer
and Daily News. The key issues are a proposal to freeze contributions
to the Guild's pension plan and take over control of the pension
fund, and a demand that the company be able to lay off employees
without regard to seniority.
If the strike takes
place, the Philadelphia Metro will increase it's circulation to
meet the city's demand for a daily newspaper.
Day after day, the
staff of the Philadelphia Metro meets the challenge of delivering
news and information to more than 300,000 area residents. Given
the recent news surrounding the uncertainty of the Philadelphia
Inquirer and Daily News, as well as the general concern in the
newspaper industry, we believe it is important to share some important
developments at Metro, as well as some other information that
you will find useful:
- This has
been Metro Philadelphia's best year yet! Through the
first six months of the year, Metro Philadelphia experienced
unprecedented growth, culminating with more than 22% year-over-year
growth in July 2006. It?s pretty simple: our revenue is growing
because our advertisers know that our combination of compelling
news and high impact distribution works. The Philadelphia Inquirer,
daily circulation fell 7.5% to 330,622 while Sunday declined
4.5% to 682,214. Daily circulation at its sister pub, The Philadelphia
Daily News, dropped 7% to 112,540.
- We are the
No. 1 paper in the city of Philadelphia! When you want
your message in front of upwardly-mobile decision makers with
disposable income in the city of Philadelphia, Metro has to
be your first choice. According to Scarborough, Metro is read
by more people in the city of Philadelphia than any other weekday
paper. And, because it only takes about 20 minutes to read,
research shows that every page in Metro is read which guarantees
maximum exposure for your message.
- We are
not going anywhere! Metro Philadelphia is the first
US edition published by a global newspaper company that has
quietly become the world?s largest! Every day, we reach more
than 19 million readers worldwide in 93 cities. Our increasing
circulation and readership, young professional audience, and
unique format confirm that Metro is the future of newspapers.
Our total
commitment to you is reflected in everything we do. From our first-rate
news team, to our dedicated distribution staff and our outstanding
group of sales professionals, we?ve pledged to work harder than
ever before. As the rest of the newspaper industry struggles,
we thrive.
The good news is, you
are the one who benefits.
