Strategic Reports From Shaping the Future of the Newspaper

7 June 2006 -- Six new strategy reports on some of the most important
recent developments in the newspaper industry globally -- new
revenue models, outsourcing, digital classifieds, new editorial
concepts advertising science and pricing strategies -- have just
been published by the World Association of Newspapers.
The reports from the WAN Shaping the Future of
the Newspaper project, which were released at the World Newspaper
Congress and World Editors Forum taking place in Moscow, Russia,
focus on how publishers can benefit from the opportunities provided
by these developments.
The reports, and the SFN project, are an exclusive
service to WAN Members, who will receive the reports in the coming
days and can now download electronic versions and more from the

WAN is a leading provider of industry research
and analysis through its SFN project, which identifies, analyses

annual strategy reports, SFN provides WAN members with a library

WAN conducts the SFN project with support from
five international partners -- PubliGroupe, the Swiss-based international
advertising and promotion group; MAN Roland, a leading company

IT and media group; and Samsung Electronics, a global leader in

WAN has published 30 SFN Strategy Reports in the
past five years. The reports released Wednesday are:
- New Revenue Strategies, which examines how successful
newspapers are adopting emerging revenue streams including diversification,
online video and podcasting advertising and various forms of subscriptions
to valuable content online.
- Outsourcing, which offers cases of newspapers
that are focusing on core competencies and outsourcing advertising,
printing, human resources, editorial, accounting or other roles.
The report provides advice on how to determine whether to outsource
or not, and includes a WAN global survey of outsourcing at newspaper
companies.
- Digital Classified Survey, which includes the
latest instalment of the WAN classified advertising survey. The
report examines the speed of migration of classified advertisements
from print to web in several key markets, and includes case studies
of how some of the successful players are responding.
- New Editorial Concepts, which focuses on how
newspapers are providing readers with compelling content that
bring them back for more. The report also examines newspaper companies
around the globe that are developing new editorial products based
on groundbreaking research.
- Advertising Science, which describes how focusing
on the building blocks of revenue development and attention to
all elements of the advertising sales process leads to big rewards,
both in terms of increases in revenue and reader loyalty.
- Pricing Strategies, which examines the impact
of different pricing strategies on profitability and reader loyalty
at newspapers around the globe.
